Track record headline statement
Mayesbrook Youth Project has delivered trusted, community-rooted youth provision in Barking and Dagenham since 2016. Since incorporating as an asset-locked CIC in March 2019, we have grown steadily from volunteer-led park sessions reaching 60 young people a year to an accredited programme supporting around 180 young people annually, secured and managed approximately £320,000 across 14 grants (with 13 of 14 projects delivered on or under budget), completed an independent youth work quality review (2024), and established formal termly referral partnerships with two local secondary schools and the borough’s Early Help service.
Governance, leadership and delivery team expertise
Board of Directors
Governance sits with an active seven-member Board of Directors that combines lived experience of growing up in the borough with senior professional oversight:
- Two former service users now in their twenties (bringing direct insight into what keeps teenagers engaged and safe).
- A retired Barking and Dagenham secondary headteacher (Chair; safeguarding and school partnership lead).
- A qualified chartered accountant (Treasurer; financial controls, budgeting and restricted fund oversight).
- A youth justice and adolescent safeguarding specialist (contextual safeguarding and risk management).
- An adolescent mental health practitioner and a long-standing local community elder.
The board meets quarterly, reviewing management accounts, grant expenditure and safeguarding logs at every meeting, alongside a full annual review of strategy and risk.
Staff and volunteer team expertise
Our delivery model works because our team combines professional youth work accreditation with authentic local credibility:
- Core delivery staff: Two part-time youth workers (including our co-founder/Project Director and a qualified youth worker who first attended Mayesbrook Youth Project as a teenager) plus a sessional mentoring coordinator.
- Qualifications and specialist training: Across the staff and volunteer team, practitioners hold Level 3 Youth Work qualifications (NYA-recognised), trauma-informed mentoring certification (PACE and AMBIT), detached youth work accreditation, Contextual Safeguarding and Level 3 Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) training, First Aid (including street/bleed kit training), and accredited personal-development training.
- Lived-experience volunteer pool: Supported by a pool of 15 trained, DBS-checked volunteers, around one-third (5) of whom are alumni of our own youth club and mentoring programme.
